To everybody, esp. to my fellow Filipinos,
Please click on the above links. This is an article that a certain Malu Fernandez wrote for People Asia Magazine. I just came across this today. This has raised a furor globally…rightfully so. Read on… and try to relax & do your deep breathing techniques.
This is my take on this…
We are not trying to judge her, but what I am trying to comprehend is why she has those opinions… and to publish them!!?!!? I hardly call her a journalist. That article was done in very very poor taste & judgment. (!!!). And I wonder why the editor-in-chief let the article go through!
We, Filipinos, are very proud of our heritage (I think so too!). That is why it just incensed us to read something like this and from a Filipino, too (if you can even call her that, now…)! Finding a stable & good paying job in our home country does not come easy. Not a lot are fortunate to do so… And even those who were able to, had to go through all the headaches to get to where they are right now. All those lining up we have to do for interviews…at least 10 applicants to 1 job position…etc… But we persevere, we do not procrastinate and depend on welfare like they do here in the States (no pun intended…). Going overseas to provide for our family is something that we should be proud of. I think it is safe for me to say that almost all Filipinos would rather live in our country and be with their love ones. I know I do… Sure, it is nice to travel and go to Spain, Italy, the U.S., Greece (and so on & so forth…) and experience Disneyland, the snow, and to think how easy it is to buy a car on credit, etc… But iba pa rin talaga ang Pilipinas… We may be third world, we may not be a rich country, but when it comes to family, culture, bayanihan, hard work…to name a few…we won’t be beat!
When Fernandez insulted our Overseas Filipino Workers, she didn’t just do that to that particular group in the plane, at the airport in Dubai…she insulted the whole country, it does not even matter if you are an OFW or not, She put down millions of Filipinos, thousands of nurses, seamen, domestic helpers, skilled workers, etc… She insulted our desire to provide for our families back home. Particularly, doesn’t she know that the money that OFWs send home help our economy?
Aaah Boracay! If I could go to Boracay today or to any place in the Philippines…I would. If I could eat batchoy, halo halo, balut, lechon, ago-go, etc…I would be the happiest person in the world. Cause you see…we don’t have those here in Ohio. I could make my own halo halo, but nothing beats enjoying it under a nipa shade or in a palamahawan sa mercado in Himamaylan:).
One last word… and, somehow, someway…I hope this gets to Ms. Fernandez AND!!! People Asia Magazine. FILIPINOS!!! Just because this so-called journalist THINKS she is a globe trotting, Louis Vuitton laden, expensive-perfume-reeking kind of person… it does not make her better than any of us! All she cared for in her entire article was her pedicure, make-up and accessories. Shame on you, Malu Fernandez, for being so condescending. And shame on you, People Asia Magazine for allowing this person to write a story with no substance at all. Every time she does an assignment, she will represent People Asia Magazine and you don’t want a person like this to be a part of your respectable publication. You should reassign her to classified ads. Now that doesn’t require a lot of thinking and traveling. I don’t want to be trapped in the same plane with her. Can you imagine if she slashed her wrist at the thought of sharing the plane with us, Filipinos? It will be too messy and I don’t want blood on my hair…
